The Case for a 10ft Container
Small sites, short driveways and tight municipal setback rules are what usually push a buyer toward a 10ft container. The footprint is about 10' long by 8' wide, with 8'6" of exterior height on the standard unit. Inside you get a little over 9' of length, close to 7'9" of width and roughly 7'10" of headroom. That is a genuinely usable room, not a locker.
Compare it to a shed and the difference is structural. A 10ft container is a welded steel box with a lockable steel door, corner castings that let it be lifted and moved again, and a floor built to carry cargo weight. Nothing to frame, no roof to shingle, and it can leave the property as easily as it arrived.
What people actually put in them
- Tools and small equipment on a residential lot where a larger unit would dominate the yard
- Secure storage at a jobsite that changes location every few months
- Overflow inventory behind a retail or restaurant space with a small service area
- Feed, tack and fencing supplies at a paddock or barn
- A base unit for a modified build such as a pump house, kiosk or ticket booth
Standard, high cube and roll-up door versions
The 10ft high cube stands 9'6" instead of 8'6", giving about 8'10" of interior height. On a footprint this compact the extra foot is noticeable, particularly if you plan to hang shelving above head height or line the walls.
A roll-up door is the other option worth thinking about. Standard cargo doors swing out and need four to five feet of clearance in front. If the container is going against a fence line or into a parking space, a roll-up shutter removes that constraint entirely.
New Versus Used at This Size
We stock both. New and one-trip 10ft containers have factory paint, unmarked floors and door seals that have not been weathered. Used 10ft units cost less and are graded wind and watertight or cargo-worthy, which means they will do the job while showing dents, scuffs and patched paint.
If you are looking at used, judge it on three things. Does the roof hold standing water anywhere. Do the door gaskets sit flat all the way around when closed. Is the floor dry, with no soft spots near the door sill. Everything else is cosmetic. All units are inspected before dispatch, and the buyer's guide explains what each grade means in practice.
Placement and delivery
Delivery is by tilt-bed trailer. A 10ft container is the easiest size to place, but the truck itself is not small. It still needs a firm approach and enough straight room to back in, tilt and slide the unit off. Gravel, compacted dirt and concrete all work. Soft lawn after rain does not.
Set the container on blocks or ties at the four corners. Level keeps the doors square and the gap underneath keeps the floor dry. Ten minutes of prep here saves you from a door that binds two winters from now.
