Description
A Tandem-Axle Workhorse for Mowers, Quads and Yard Loads
Landscapers, acreage owners and weekend DIYers rarely need a full equipment trailer. They need something that swallows a zero-turn mower, a quad or a pallet of mulch and still parks beside the garage. That is the job this pre-owned 2021 Big Tex 6.5 ft x 16 ft utility trailer was built for. Rated at 6,000 lbs gross while weighing only 1,630 lbs itself, it leaves 4,370 lbs of usable payload behind a half-ton pickup or a properly equipped SUV.
The deck size is the one most owners settle on after buying something too short the first time. A riding mower and a push mower sit end to end; an ATV rides up front with space behind it for ramps, fuel cans and hand tools. Drop the rear ramp gate and wheeled gear rolls straight aboard. Stand it back up and it works as a tailgate that keeps brush and bagged material from walking off the back on the highway.
Underneath are two 3,500 lb cambered axles with quick-lubricating hubs and electric brakes, carried on multi-leaf springs with an equalizer so the deck stays settled instead of hopping over expansion joints. An angle-iron frame supports treated pine planking, and the primed-and-painted black finish saw a single season of use. A spare tire and mount were added by the previous owner.

Before committing, weigh the heaviest thing you actually plan to carry rather than a typical load. Payload disappears faster than most buyers expect once a mower deck, a fuel drum and a couple of pallets are aboard. Your tow vehicle needs a 2 in ball, a 7-way connector and a brake controller to operate the electric brakes. Set against a single-axle trailer of the same deck size, this tandem arrangement tracks straighter at highway speed and is far more forgiving if a tire lets go.
Once it lands, read the date codes on the tires, look along the deck boards for soft spots, and work the ramp gate hinge a few times before the first heavy load goes on.
