Description

A Sundowner Straight Load With Rumber Underfoot

Sundowner earned its reputation on steel-frame, aluminum-skin construction, and this 2005 Sunlite is a clear example of why. The steel skeleton provides the structural strength, the aluminum exterior stays out of the rust cycle, and the result is a trailer that still presents remarkably fresh two decades after it left the factory.

The floor is the standout specification. Rumber is a recycled rubber and plastic composite rather than wood or bare aluminum, and it does three things at once: it will not rot, it gives horses a grippier surface than metal, and it takes some of the road vibration out of the ride. On a used trailer, a floor material that cannot rot removes the single largest unknown from the purchase.

The layout is a conventional two-horse straight load with a front dressing room built on a 2-foot short wall and a 7-foot long wall. That dressing room is a proper dry space for saddles, bridles, rugs and travel gear, kept entirely separate from the horses, which is worth more on a rainy show morning than any amount of exterior trim.

Specifications

  • 2005 Sundowner Sunlite, two-horse straight load, used
  • Steel frame with aluminum skin
  • Dressing room with 2 ft short wall and 7 ft long wall
  • Rumber floor
  • 3,500 lb axles on 15 in tires
  • Manual jack and spare tire included
  • Outside width approximately 7 ft
  • Inside height approximately 7 ft, roughly 21 hands
  • Box length approximately 12 ft
  • Empty weight approximately 2,800 lb; GVWR 8,050 lb

That 8,050 lb GVWR is a genuine point of difference. Most two-horse trailers in this size stop at 7,000 lb, so this Sunlite gives you roughly a thousand pounds of extra headroom, which is useful once you factor in two large horses, full water, a loaded dressing room and the weight of hay. The flip side is that you need to size your tow vehicle against 8,050 lb rather than assuming a standard two-horse figure.

Straight-load versus slant-load is the other decision buyers weigh here. A straight load like this gives each horse a wider, squarer space and suits animals that travel poorly on an angle, while a slant tends to pack more horses into the same length. For two head, the straight load is usually the more comfortable ride.

Before hauling, check the Rumber floor and its supports, confirm the brakes engage and every light works, and look at tire date codes since rubber ages on its own schedule. All dimensions and weights above are approximate.
