Description
Simple, Light and Rust-Resistant: An Aluminum Straight Load
Not every horse owner needs mangers, fans and a carpeted tack room. Plenty need a dependable two-horse that tows easily, does not rot from the inside out and does not cost a fortune, and that is precisely the niche this 2004 Dalton Adam 2HSTBP fills. Dalton built straightforward aluminum trailers, and this straight-load example has come through twenty years in very clean condition.
All-aluminum construction is the headline. It keeps the empty weight around 2,800 lbs, which is light enough for a well-equipped half-ton or a mid-size SUV with the right rating, and it sidesteps the corrosion that eventually catches up with older steel trailers parked in a wet paddock. The aluminum floor continues that logic, replacing the wooden deck that is usually the first thing to fail on a trailer of this age.
The one feature buyers tend to notice immediately is the rear horse escape door. On a straight load, getting around a horse once it is aboard is genuinely awkward, and a rear escape door removes the need to squeeze past. Interior height runs to roughly 7 ft 6 in, about 22.5 hands, so larger horses have real clearance above the poll rather than a nominal inch. A manual jack and a spare tire are included, which is the difference between a roadside problem and a roadside inconvenience.

The 7,000 lb GVWR is the number that governs everything. It covers the trailer, both horses, tack, water and hay together, so with 2,800 lbs of trailer you have roughly 4,200 lbs to work with. Two 1,200 lb horses and a reasonable load of gear fit; two heavy warmbloods plus a full water tank do not leave much room. Work out your own total before deciding this is the right size.
On a used aluminum trailer the inspection list differs from a steel one. Rust is not the issue; fatigue cracks around welds and mounting points are, so look closely where the frame meets the body and around the axle hangers. Check the floor for pitting where urine has sat, read the tire date codes, and confirm the brakes and every light work before you load a horse.
