Description
A Straightforward Steel Two-Horse for Everyday Barn Duty
Not every owner needs aluminum and a long options list. This 2010 Calico is a tidy steel bumper pull with a straight-load layout that does the ordinary jobs well: the lesson barn, the vet appointment, the local show and the weekend trail ride. The condition throughout is very clean, and at roughly 3,000 lbs empty against a 7,000 lb GVWR it is an easy tow behind a properly rated truck or SUV.
Steel is the reason it costs what it costs and the reason many owners still prefer it. It takes knocks without denting the way thin aluminum sheet does, and repairs are simple and cheap wherever there is a welder. The pressure-treated wood floor follows the same logic: it gives horses a surface with traction and some give underfoot, and when it eventually wears it is replaceable rather than terminal.
The layout puts a walk-in dressing room ahead of the horses, built on a 2 ft short wall and a 7 ft long wall, with the two-horse area behind. That dressing room keeps saddles, blankets and grooming kit out of the weather and away from the horses, and the rear escape door gives you a safer way to get clear during loading and unloading. About 6 ft of outside width and 7 ft of inside height suit average-sized horses up to roughly 21 hands of clearance.

With a pre-owned steel trailer the checks are floor, tires and wiring, in that order. Pull the mats and look at the wood and the crossmembers underneath, check tires by date code rather than tread depth alone, and plug in the harness to confirm every light works before the first trip. Surface rust on a steel frame is normal and manageable; flaking at a weld or a soft spot in the floor is not.
Then do the weight arithmetic. A 7,000 lb GVWR is the ceiling for the trailer, the horses and everything in the dressing room combined, so two 1,000 lb horses plus tack leaves sensible margin, while two heavy horses and a full dressing room does not leave much. This is a good first trailer for a rider stepping up from borrowing one, and a practical second trailer for a barn that needs something simple always ready to hook up.
