Description
Three Horses, Eight Feet Wide, and Still Aluminum
Adding a third horse changes the capacity conversation entirely, and the 2018 Lakota 83HBPSL answers it without falling back on steel. The axles step up to 5,200 lbs on 16 in tires, the GVWR reaches 11,160 lbs, and yet the all-aluminum structure holds the empty weight to 4,050 lbs. That combination leaves a genuinely useful load allowance while keeping the rust problems of a steel three-horse out of the picture.
Width is the other thing this trailer gets right. A full 8 ft outside width with 7 ft 6 in of interior height, roughly 22.5 hands, gives larger horses room to stand square rather than leaning on a divider for the whole journey. The 16 ft box supports three animals comfortably, and mangers give each one head space and somewhere to put hay on a longer haul.
Practical details follow the same pattern. An escape door means you can step clear after loading the front horse rather than backing out past it. The 2 ft short-wall dressing room keeps saddles, bridles and gear in their own space away from dust and hair. An aluminum floor removes the rotting-plywood worry that shadows older trailers, and a manual jack and spare tire are included. For a trainer, a breeder or a family that campaigns three horses most weekends, it is a sensible rig rather than an indulgent one.

Start with the tow vehicle. Three horses, tack, hay and water on top of 4,050 lbs of trailer puts you close enough to the 11,160 lb GVWR that a half-ton truck is unlikely to be the right answer, and your rating should sit above the loaded figure with room to spare rather than exactly on it. Make sure the brake controller is matched to the 5,200 lb axles and calibrated before the first loaded trip.
Then measure. Eight feet of width is a real advantage in a horse trailer but a real consideration on narrow lanes, at gateways and in the average barn yard, so walk the route you use most before ordering. On arrival, check the aluminum floor and the welds around the axle hangers, read the tire date codes and test the brakes; a well-kept aluminum trailer like this holds its service life and its value, but only if the running gear has been maintained.
