Description
Full-Tilt Loading in a 16,000 lb Package
Between the light 14K trailers and the 20K-plus heavyweights sits a class that suits most compact-equipment owners perfectly, and this new 2024 Rice PTHD22 lands right in the middle of it. Two 8,000 lb cambered EZ Lube axles with electric brakes carry a 16,000 lb GVWR, and a 4,090 lb dry weight leaves 11,910 lb for the machine, the attachments and the chains.
It is a full-tilt deck rather than a stationary-plus-tilt design, so the entire 22-foot bed drops to meet the ground. Equipment rolls on at a shallow angle and the deck levels itself as the load moves forward past the pivot. Nothing to unfold, nothing to lift, and no bent ramp gate to straighten at the end of the season, which matters when you are loading and unloading several times a day.
Rice builds the trailer on a 6-inch channel tongue and main frame with 3-inch formed channel crossmembers on 16-inch centers, then finishes the whole unit in powder coat rather than sprayed enamel. That finish is the reason these trailers still look presentable after a few winters parked outdoors, and the fully sealed modular wire harness holds up the same way.

Is 16K the Right Rating for You?
Work out your heaviest realistic load first: operating weight of the machine, plus buckets, forks or a hydraulic breaker, plus fuel. If that total sits comfortably under 11,910 lb you have the right trailer; if it creeps past 11,000 lb, step up a class rather than run at the ceiling. Then confirm your truck is rated to tow a loaded 16K tandem and that its brake controller is set up for two braked axles.
Against a ramp-style equipment trailer of similar length, the tilt deck trades a little payload for much faster cycles and a safer loading routine. Against a 20K tilt, it saves weight and cost while still handling most skid steers and mini excavators. When it arrives, check the tilt pivot and cam lock, test the break-away kit, and confirm the brakes engage evenly before the first job.
