Description
Small Deck, Full-Size Hydraulics
Plenty of small dump trailers cut the same corner: a single-acting cylinder that lifts the bed and then lets gravity drop it back down. Griffin did not. This 2024 5×10 runs a 3 in x 30 in cylinder off a 12V DC pump with power in both directions, so the bed comes down under control even when the last of a sticky load is still clinging to the floor.
The rest of the build follows the same logic. Floor and walls are 12-gauge smooth steel finished in black powder coat rather than sprayed paint, which is the difference between a scratch that stays a scratch and one that turns into a rust streak by the second spring. A deep cycle marine battery feeds the pump and holds charge between jobs.
At 1,895 lb empty and 7,000 lb gross, this trailer leaves 5,105 lb of payload in a package a half-ton pickup can pull without a second thought. That combination is why landscapers, handymen and homeowners clearing a property tend to land on a 7K over something larger they would only half fill.

Sizing advice for this one is mostly arithmetic. A cubic yard of dry topsoil is roughly 2,000 lb and wet is closer to 2,700, so two and a half yards of damp soil is about all the 5,105 lb payload wants even though the box will hold more. Mulch and brush are the opposite problem, filling the box at a fraction of the weight, which is where the tarp brackets earn their place on the highway.
The barn door gate is worth choosing deliberately. It swings clear for clean bulk dumping and makes the rear opening wide enough to shovel into, but unlike a combination spreader gate it will not meter material out slowly. On arrival, run the bed up and down a few cycles, confirm the battery is holding, and set your brake controller against a loaded trailer rather than an empty one.
