One of the first decisions you will make when buying a shipping container is whether to go new (one-trip) or used. Both can serve you for decades, but they differ in price, appearance, and ideal use case. This guide breaks down the real differences so you can buy with confidence.
What “New” Really Means
A brand-new container has technically made one cargo voyage from the factory — which is why the industry calls them one-trip containers. They arrive with crisp paint, clean interiors, solid floors, and minimal wear. If appearance matters — a customer-facing pop-up, an office conversion, or a unit visible from your home — one-trip is the premium choice.
- Best for: conversions, retail and hospitality builds, branded units, long-term curb appeal.
- Trade-off: the highest upfront price of any condition grade.
Understanding Used Container Grades
“Used” is not a single condition. Containers are graded by how much wear they carry and whether they are still certified for ocean shipping:
- Cargo-Worthy (CW): structurally certified for continued shipping. Wind & watertight with normal cosmetic wear. A great middle ground.
- Wind & Watertight (WWT): structurally sound and weatherproof with surface rust and dings from prior service. The most cost-effective option for on-site storage.
- As-Is: sold in current condition and may have damage. Priced accordingly — always review the details first.

Price: How Much You Actually Save
As a rule of thumb, a quality used WWT or cargo-worthy container costs significantly less than a one-trip unit of the same size. If the container will live behind a fence, hold tools, equipment, or seasonal inventory, that savings goes straight to your bottom line — the box performs identically.
Lifespan and Durability
Shipping containers are built from weathering steel to survive years at sea. A well-maintained used container can easily last 20+ years on land. The difference between new and used is mostly cosmetic, not structural — provided you buy a wind & watertight or better grade.
How to Decide in 30 Seconds
- Choose one-trip if: looks matter, you are modifying it, or it will be highly visible.
- Choose cargo-worthy if: you want near-new integrity at a lower price and may relocate it later.
- Choose WWT/used if: the goal is dry, secure storage and value is the priority.
