Twelve Feet of Straightforward, Rust-Resistant Horse Trailer

There is a case for buying less trailer than you think you need. If most of your hauling is a twenty-minute run to a lesson, a trailhead or the vet clinic, a 12-foot box is easier to reverse into a crowded lot, easier to store at home, and easier on the truck than something twice its length. This 2001 CM Odyssey is built around exactly that use.

The construction is steel frame under an aluminum skin, a combination that gives the structure steel’s strength while the exterior panels stay out of the rust cycle. It is a practical approach and it has aged well here.

The specification that should get your attention, though, is the aluminum floor. On a used horse trailer the floor is the single most important safety item, and it is where wood rots and steel corrodes quietly under the mats until someone discovers the problem the hard way. Aluminum does neither. That does not excuse you from inspecting it, but it does mean you are starting from a much better position than a wooden floor of the same age.

An escape door is the other feature worth paying for on a two-horse. Once the first horse is loaded and tied, that door is your way out of the front of the trailer without squeezing past an animal in a narrow space, and anyone who has done it the other way only needs to do it once to appreciate the difference.

The towing maths are friendly. At 2,800 lb empty and 7,000 lb gross, a two-horse load sits comfortably within what a well-equipped half-ton truck or a properly rated SUV can handle, provided you have a brake controller fitted and a receiver rated for the weight. Do not be tempted to go lighter than that on the tow vehicle just because the trailer is small: the horses move around, and that changes how the trailer behaves.

Your pre-haul checklist on a trailer of this age: lift the mats and look at the aluminum floor and its supports, check tire date codes because rubber ages whether or not it is used, test every light, and roll slowly while applying the trailer brakes by hand to confirm they engage. Inside height of 7 ft gives clearance for roughly 21 hands, which is ample for most horses.
